This is where the basic blueprint evolved. Almost everything that happened to life hence happened here first.
Life evolved in the ocean in a thousand different ways, with plants and animals emerging. Animals evolved around the same basic structure: mouth and eyes at the front, through a digestive system and out the other end. Plants took nutrients directly from the water, and energy directly from the sun. This they evolved around the structure of groupings of long, thin leaves.
Animals at this time mostly had an exoskeleton, though there were variations. Trilobites evolved thousands of different ways of eating and defending against against one another.

Top predators: anomalocarids. Anomalocaridids were flat, free-swimming, segmented animals that possessed two grasping appendages in front of the mouth, the "great appendages". These consisted of a dozen or more jointed segments, which could be curled like fingers to grasp prey. Each segment bore a pair of spines, which were sometimes armed with smaller spinelets, that could be used to impale their food. he sclerotized nature of the frontal appendages and jaws would have made them effective in piercing and shredding soft-bodied or tough prey items such as worms, primitive arthropods, and other anomalocaridids. However, the unmineralized skeleton would have made it difficult, although perhaps not impossible, to pierce the hard carapaces of animals like trilobites. But it knew the dangers of the vortexes of the near shore waves. If she wasn't careful, they could trap her in their rhythm until she drowned. • Swimming in the ocean, feeding • Blindsided by massive fish and almost eaten after a chase • Exhaustion. There is no food. The constant threat of going out and being eaten. • Benches to the coasts, or river. Drawn to the edge by washed up plan matter. • Ventures onto land for food, their insects everywhere. There reading the seaweed and rudimentary plants. • It is chased by the same creature again, goes into onto land to escape again. The predator waits for it to return, instead, creature crawls to a new area and breeds. Devonian happens here. Plants go on land, insects follow.

My favorite Cambrian creature. It's a creature that has been the source of much confusion. Originally we did not have a complete fossilized Anomalocaris specimen. So the three sections they did have were identified as three separate creatures. Once the got a more complete specimen they realized what they were dealing with. Compared to other (known) creatures roaming the waters at that time Anomalocaris was quite big. 2-3' long was huge back then and that is why they are believed that it was a predator. There is some doubt about that though. If it was a predator it had a limited run of success as one. Creatures it might have preyed on, like Trilobites outlasted it. It just wasn't able to adapt to the changes in climate and and lost out as a result. Predators are often more vulnerable than their prey in the long run. Either way. the Anomalocaris just wasn't able to make it out of the Cambrian.
